In the 1960s, a new generation of young Puerto Ricans born and raised in New York City began looking for a way to connect with their ancestral roots. The boogaloo was just the ticket: a fusion of Latin and soul beats, the genre had an enormous impact on the Latin youth of the time. Pete Rodríguez, a young man of Puerto Rican descent living in the Bronx, was considered the pioneer of this new cultural and musical movement that got dancers up on their feet. Pete started his band “La Magnifica,” with whom he recorded his first album and by 1965 he continued recording with his band Pete Rodriguez y su Conjunto. In 1967, the Latin boogaloo sound was at an all-time high with his major hit song “I Like It Like That” when he went on to release the album Oh, That’s Nice! (Ay Que Bueno!) on Alegre Records. The title track opens the set with an insanely exciting boogaloo. The album is split just about evenly between boogaloo and salsa songs, with standouts like “Fango” written by Tony Pabon, “Bobby” an English number with a salsa sound, and “Asi Asi” (written by Tony Pabon and Manny Rodriguez) a fiery boogaloo in Spanish that explains what the boogaloo is by singing that it’s “guajira y rocanrol,” meaning it’s Cuban rhythm, guajira, mixed with rock ‘n’ roll.
