Strikes Back was released in 1987 on Fania Records and the album was so well received that it earned a GRAMMY nomination for Best Tropical Latin Performance. This album is considered one of Héctor’s most honest and poignant since El Cantante, with songs like the biographic song written by Tommy Sánchez titled “Loco” and “Ponce” dedicated to his native city in Puerto Rico. While at the time, romantic salsa by artists like Eddie Santiago were all the rage, Héctor remained true to the rhythmic and narrative styles of earlier salsa. There is a sadness and melancholy on this album, as Héctor had been through much tragedy in life and it was reflected in the recording and in songs like the Amanda Miguel cover “Ella Mintio,” “Escarcha,” and the Tite Curet Alonso composition “Plato de Segunda Mesa”. Lavoe surrendered his soul on this recording.
